Now there’s a question I ask myself!
The easy answer is that I am going to walk a roughly 1,200 mile trail between Lands End and John ‘O Groats. I will be mostly on my own, camping and carrying everything I need on my back. I will leave from Lands End on Easter weekend and should get to John ‘O Groats by early July. That’s about three months on the road.
However if you want to know why I’m doing it, that’s a bit trickier to answer.
After 6+ years of working after uni, I needed/wanted a break. Travelling felt a bit cliched and pointless, while voluntary work (if it was to be more than a gap-year style piss-up) sounded a bit too intense.
I mentioned LEJOG to a friend initially as a joke. But the more I thought about it the more it seemed perfect. It would be an immense challenge for me but in a completely different way from work. It’s both extreme and slightly mundane at the same time (a bit like me). It would be an amazing experience and I would achieve something I could be proud of forever. And I’d get buns of steel as a result!
I also realized that if I was going to put so much time, effort and money into this endeavour it seemed wasteful and selfish for somebody other than myself not to benefit. So I decided to get sponsorship – check out my sponsorship page for more details.
Thanks to an incredibly understanding employer, encouraging family and friends, and the fact I’m not currenty paying any rent, the idea slowly became reality. I can’t back out now, it’s really happening!
Thanks to the wonders of modern tech I’ll be blogging be as I go. You can live through every stile, field and campsite in realtime as it happens. How exciting for you all!
